Drawing For Kids Eye Can Art

We had the pleasure of reviewing an art kit for kids by Eye Can Art. Eye Can Art has a line of eight different art kits that come complete with directions and supplies inside the can!

I ran across Eye Can Art on Twitter and was excited to see these fabulous art kits are created by two passionate moms like myself that wish to share art with kids.

Contest has ended – thank you to everyone that entered!

Here is the beginning of their story from their website:

Bridget Daly and Shannon Ninburg, two experienced art educators in Seattle Washington, had often been approached by parents looking for a way to encourage art enthusiasm in their kids; dedicated moms and dads who knew the academic advantages that accompany art activity and wanted to create with their kids, but lacked the confidence to start.

Responding to the clear need for at‐home guided art activities, combined with an understanding of everyone’s busy schedule, Bridget and Shannon developed the Eye Can Art concept: high-quality, no-sweat, everything-included art kits that spark open-ended artistic exploration.

As teachers, they took the most successful projects from their classrooms and turned them into easy-to-use kits that teach real art techniques and basic art concepts. All Eye Can Art kits come with clear, illustrated instructions, are packaged in beautiful reusable canisters, and provide the materials to try the project multiple times.

Given the choice of eight different kits – I chose the Sketch Foam Printmaking Kit!  Since the inspiration behind Drawing For Kids is encouraging parents to share drawing and art with their children, I wanted to show that drawings can also be used to create other forms of art.

You’ll see in our printmaking project that drawing is the foundation of printmaking!

It was like Christmas morning when our kit arrived!  My daughter was anxious to dig right in but I made her wait until we had some quiet time on a Saturday morning to explore our kit.

We opened up our can and explored everything inside.

The Sketch Foam Printmaking Kit includes:

  • Brayer (roller for printing inks)
  • Printing inks
  • Pencil
  • Foam sheets
  • Paper
  • Instructions

My daughter was inspired by the animal motif on the can and wanted to draw a cow for her first print.  The instructions are very easy to follow.  You simply use the included pencil to carefully draw your picture on the foam sheet.  Once my daughter was done with her drawing, I went over her lines to just make them a bit deeper for better print quality.  You need to be very careful not to poke the pencil through the foam sheet.

Next we laid the foam sheet on a paper towel while we loaded the brayer with the included white printing ink (we used a plastic cutting board to spread the ink on the brayer).  Once the foam sheet was coated with printing ink we simply placed a piece of paper on top and gently pressed down.  We carefully peeled the paper from the foam sheet and voila!  Our print was complete!  We placed our print to the side so that it could dry completely.

We had so much fun, we couldn’t wait to try another print!  This time my daughter decided to draw a teddy bear.  She wanted to add initials to his shirt so we had to talk about writing words so they would read correctly for prints.

I showed her that we had to write the letters backward so that when we printed it – we could read it.  She wanted his initials to be B.E.H.  (Bear Eating Honey – make sense to me)!  We tried the blue printing ink for this one and printed it on a bright piece of colored paper!  Great results!

We had a great time exploring both colors of printing ink on various colored papers.  My daughter was delighted to see her drawings turn into prints.  We’ll be using this technique to make our Thanksgiving place cards this week.  Stay tuned for an upcoming post.

I would happily use any of the Eye Can Art kits and highly recommend them to other moms!
